Matthew Paige Damon s-a nascut pe 8 octombrie 1970 în Massachusets, SUA. Tatal sau, Kent, era bancher iar mama, Nancy Carlsson-Paige profesoara la Colegiul Lesley. In prezent cei doi sunt divortati. Matt mai are un frate, Kyle, cu trei ani mai mare decat el, de profesie sculptor.
Matt era un copil timid, iar cum educatia era supervizata de mama lui, a fost un elev de nota 10. Tatal l-a învatat totul despre baseball, asa cum ii sta bine oricarui american. Bineinteles, Matt a si practicat acest sport in Liga Mica. Cu toate acestea, mai presus de parinti a fost o persoana care l-a influentat de mic. Un pusti cu 2 ani mai mic decat el, vecin de cartier - Ben Affleck.
Cei doi au fost din primul moment de nedespartit: au jucat baseball impreuna, se duceau aproape zilnic la cinematograf si au urmat aceeasi scoala, Rindge and Latin. Aici Matt a luat primele lectii de actorie.
Primul rol (de fapt o aparitie foarte scurta) l-a avut in Mystic Pizza din 1988, dupa care a urmat un rol, tot secundar, intr-un film TV, Rising Son, in 1990.
Primul rol important il are in School Ties, alaturi de prietenul sau Ben Affleck.
In anii urmatori a mai avut cateva aparitii, mai mult sau mai putin importante in: Geronimo: An American Legend, filmul TV The Good Old Boys si Courage Under Fire / Curaj în linia intai.
1997 inseamna anul in care Matt Damon devine cunoscut ca Rudy Baylor, tanarul avocat care conduce procesul vietii sale impotriva unei companii care nu vrea sa plateasca transplantul de maduva osoasa pentru un pacient bolnav de leucemie. Este vorba de ecranizarea bestseller-ului lui John Grisham The Rainmaker.
In acelasi an, joaca in apreciatul Good Will Hunting. Filmul primeste 9 nominalizãri la premiile Oscar. Damon este nominalizat pentru rol principal la Oscar si la Globul de Aur. Duo-ul Ben Affleck - Matt Damon castiga Oscarul pentru cel mai bun scenariu original precum si Globul de Aur. In 1997 incepe o relatie cu Winona Ryder, de care se desparte insa in mai 2000.
În 1998 va juca rolul soldatului James Ryan, din Saving Private Ryan / Salvaþi soldatul Ryan.
In 1998 apare in Rounders / Quinta royala, iar in anul urmator in controversatul Dogma si The Talented Mr. Ripley / Talentatul domn Ripley. Pentru acest film, Damon primeste o nominalizare la Globurile de Aur. In aceasta perioada, Matt Damon si Ben Affleck, impreuna cu Chris Moore (producator) fondeaza compania cunoscuta azi sub numele de LivePlanet.
Anul 2000 nu este unul de bun augur pentru Damon, el jucand in 4 filme bune, dar fara prea mare succes la box-office: filmul de animatie Titan A.E., The Legend of Bagger Vance, All the Pretty Horses si un rol mic în Finding Forrester.
In 2001 apare in blockbusterul Ocean’s Eleven - Faceti jocurile!
Prima jumatate a lui 2002 este fara prea mari succese pentru Damon. Apare in Gerry si in filmul de animatie produs de DreamWorks, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron / Spirit: Armasarul Vestului Salbatic, un film deosebit, in care Damon este vocea lui Spirit. The Third Wheel este titlul altui esec al lui Damon.
In a doua jumatate a lui 2002 lucrurile se mai indreapta si noul rol din thrillerul de spionaj, bazat pe romanul lui Robert Ludlum, The Bourne Identity / Identitatea lui Bourne devine blockbuster, incasand in toata lumea 213 mil.$. In acelasi an apare cateva secunde alaturi de Brad Pitt in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind / Confesiunile unei minti periculoase, in rolul unor concurenti la o emisiune TV.
Fratii Farrely il aleg in 2003 ca interpret principal in Stuck on You / Lipit de tine, o comedie de milioane, in care cei doi au niste roluri destul de dificile, cele ale unor fraþi siamezi, lipiti unul de celalalt din nastere.
In 2004 face iar echipa cu regizorul Kevin Smith, care il distribuie intr-un rol secundar din Jersey Girl. Din pacate, incasarile filmului sunt sub asteptari. Tot in acest an joaca în blockbusterul The Bourne Supremacy / Suprematia lui Bourne, partea a doua a trilogiei Bourne. Acest film a beneficiat de un succes si mai mare decat prima parte, el avand deja incasari de 220 mil. $ in toata lumea.
