Pe numele lui intreg, Ralph Nathaniel Twisleton-Wykeham Fiennes, s-a nascut la data de 22 decembrie 1962, in Anglia.
2 nominalizari la Oscar, o nominalizare la Emmy si 4 nominalizari la Golden Globe.
Dorindu-si initial sa se faca pictor, Finnnes s-a inscris la Colegiul de Arta si Design Chelsea, inainte de a se transfera la Academia regala de Arta Dramatica din Londra pentru a studia actoria. Dupa absolvire, el s-a alaturat colectivului Teatrului National Regal in 1987, si un an mai tarziu, a intrat in Compania Regala Shakespeare. In acea perioada, in calitatea de membru al companiei, a interpretat o serie de roluri clasice, incepand cu Romeo si terminand cu King's Lear Edmund.
Fiennes a devenit cunoscut unui public mai larg, in 1991, cand a aparut in calitate de interpret principal in serialul TV Un om periculos, Lawrence al Arabiei, ce s-a bucurat de un real succes. Anul urmator, a debutat in film in Wuthering Heights. Avand-o drept partenera pe Juliette Binoche, Fiennes si-a facut o intrare cu aplomb in lumea filmului, din 1993, de cand a impresionat pentru prima data publicul din intreaga lume in rolul lipsit de glorie al sadicului nazist Amon Goeth in Lista lui Schindler, pentru care a si castigat de altfel o nominalizare la Oscar pentu cel mai bun rol secundar, Fiennes a continuat sa se remarce prin perfomante distinse.
Si-a consolidat laurii doi ani mai tarziu in filmul castigator de Oscar al lui Anthony Minghella, adaptarea romanului lui Michael Ondaatje, Pacientul englez, care i-a adus nominalizari la Globul de aur si la Oscar pentru cel mai bun actor.
