Elijah Wood s-a nascut pe 28 ianuarie 1981 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Are un frate mai mare, Zachariah si o sora mai mica, Hannah. Parintii lui, Warren si Debbie Wood au divortat in 1996. Elijah are radacini engleze, irlandeze, germane si poloneze. El a locuit la Los Angeles si New York, dar in prezent sta in Venice Beach.Prima sa aparitie televizata a fost intr-un videoclip al cantaretei Paula Abdul (Forever Your Girl). Cariera lui cinematografica avea sa inceapa imediat dupa, cu un rol micut in filmul "Back To The Future II" (1989). Dar urmatorul sau rol, cel din filmul "Avalon" (ultimul dintr-o trilogie formata din filmele Diner, 1982 si Tin Men, 1987) a atras atentia asupra foarte tanarului actor, in varsta de doar 9 ani! Pentru rolul din "Avalon", unde era fiul lui Aidan Quinn a fost aclamat de critici si nominalizat la premiul Oscar. Dupa ce a jucat alaturi de Richard Gere in "Internal Affairs" (1990), actorul a primit primul rol principal, in "Paradise" (1991), unde a fost un baietel care impaca un cuplu (interpretat de Melanie Griffith si Don Johnson), aflat in prag de divort. A primit numeroase critici pozitive pentru aceasta prestatie, unii delcarand ca interpretarea lui a fost cel mai bun lucru din film! La 11 ani a jucat alaturi de Mel Gibson si Jamie Lee Curtis, in filmul "Foreever Young"!Cel mai important rol al sau a fost in trilogia "Stapanul Inelelor", o adaptare a lui Peter Jackson dupa cartile lui J.R. Tolkien.
