Nacut la 21 Martie 1958 in Londra , Leonard Gary Oldman, fiul unui sudor si al unei casnice, avea sa primeasca o bursa de studiu la Britain's Rose Bruford Drama College, colegiu pe care avea sa-l incheie in 1979 fiind licentiat in arta teatrala. Ulterior avea sa lucreze cu Greenwich Young People's Theatre si sa apara in nenumarate piese de teatru pe parcurssul anilor '80 , incluzand "The Pope's Wedding" ,pentru care avea sa primeasca "Time Out's Fringe Award" pentru cel mai bun debutant in stagiunea 1985-1986 si Premiul " British Theatre Association's Drama Magazine " pentru cel mai bun actor in 1985. A debutat in cinematografie cu "Sid and Nancy (1986), unde l-a interpretat pe Sid Vicious, unul din componentii legendarei trupe de punk Sex Pistol, performanta in urma careia avea sa primeasca premiul Evening Standard Film" pentru debut. In 1988, a fost nominalizat de Academia Regala de film si Arta TV pentru premiul de cel mai bun actor pentru portretul dramaturgului anilor '60, Joe Orton. Abilitatea lui de a se transforma psihic si stapanirea catorva tipuri de accent i-au permis sa interpreteze o varietate de roluri si caractere precum si a catorva figuri istorce, ce includ rolurile memorabile , Lee Harvey Oswald (JFK (1991)) si Ludwig van Beethoven (Immortal Beloved (1994)). A fost casatorit de trei ori , cea ma cunoscuta dintre sotii fiind Uma Thurman ( 1990 ) de care a divortat in 1992.
