James Edmund Caan este un actor american de film cunoscut datorita rolului Santino ''Sonny'' Corleone interpretat in trilogia Nasul al lui Francis Ford Copolla. S-a nascut in cartierul Bronx din New York in data de 26 martie 1940, parintii sai, Sophie si Arthur Caan, fiind refugiati evrei din Germania.Tatal sau se ocupa de afacerile cu carne.Primii ani ai vietii si-i petrece in Sunnyside, Queensiar scoala in Brooklyn, New York.Urmeaza liceul la o scoala particulara, Rhodes Preparatory School de asemenea in New York, apoi este admis la Michigan State University, studiind economia.Joaca football in echipa universitatii, iar mai tarziu se transfera la Hofstra University, dar nu o termina.De altfel motivul pentru care nu termina facultatea este ca devine foarte interesat de actorie, fiind inscris si acceptat la New York City's Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre, unde are printre profesori pe renumitul Sandford Meisner.Dupa absolvire incepe cariera actoriceasca in filme de televiziune si seriale precum The Untouchable, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour. Combat!, Get Smart, Naked City.Primul rol important in film este obtinut in 1965 in filmul Lady in a Cage, jucand alaturi de Olivia de Havilland.Urmeaza o cariera impresionanta inceputa in 1961 primul mare succes inregistrandu-l in 1971 cand este nominalizat la premiul Oscar pentru rolul Sonny Corleone din seria The Godfather.In perioada de dinaintea aparitiei filmului The Godfather, James Can se imprieteneste cu unul din sefii mafiei, Carmine ''Junior'' Persico, fiind chiar urmarit si fotografiat de catre agenti ai politiei si FBI deoarece a fost confundat cu un alt boss al mafiei din Colombo. Dupa aparitia filmului The Godfather, s-a presupus ca James Caan facea munca de cercetare pentru a juca cat mai bine rolul care-i fusese incredintat.Din 1982 si pana in 1987 Caan sufera de o depresie acuta, datorita mortii surorii sale, precum si datorita consumului de cocaina, in aceasta perioada nejucand in nici un film. Odata aceasta perioada incheiata, revine in forta pe platourile de filmare, aparitiile sale in filme fiind foarte numeroase.In viata privata a fost casatorit de 4 ori. Prima data, in 1960 se casatoreste cu Dee Jay Mathis, divortand sase ani mai tarziu, pentru a se casatori din nou in 1976, de data aceasta cu Sheila Ryan, fosta iubita a lui Elvis Prestley. Nici acest mariaj nu tine prea mult, ei divortand un an mai tarziu. Fiul sau Scott Caan, de asemenea actor, se naste in 23 august 1976. Din septembrie 1990 pana in martie 1995 James Caan a fost casatorit cu Ingrid Hajek, cu care a avut un copil, Alexander James Caan, nascut pe 10 aprilie 1991. In octombrie 1996 se casatoreste cu Linda Stoke si are doi copii, James Arthur Caan, nascut in 6 noiembrie 1995 si Jacob Nicholas Caan, nascut in 24 septembrie 1998.Este un mare iubitor si artist al artelor martiale, castigator al multor centuri si grade, fiind antrenat aproape 30 de ani de Karate Master Tak Kubota. James Caan a antrenat intr-o perioada chiar si departamentul de politie din Culver City.Este de asemenea un foarte bun jucator de golf, participand ca jucator chiar si intr-un turneu profesionist in aprilie 2008.Continua de asemenea sa joace si sa ne incante cu filmele sale fiind intr-o forma de zile mari.
