Ben Affleck s-a nascut in Berkeley, California pe 15 august 1972 si este fiul cel mare al familiei.Fratele sau mai mic, Casey, este tot actor. Cand era foarte mic, s-a mutat cu familia in Boston si tot aici avea sa-si inceapa cariera de actor; astfel la varsta de opt ani, a jucat in The Voyage of the Mimi. In acelasi an l-a cunoscut pe Matt Damon, un baiat mai mare cu doi ani decat el, care locuia pe aceiasi strada. Cei doi au devenit prieteni si mai tarziu colaboratori.Dupa o incercare de a studia la Universitatea din Vermont si Colegiul Occidental din California, Ben Affleck porneste catre Hollywood.Incepe sa apara in filme pentru televiziune si a avut un rol mic in School Ties in 1992, film in care a jucat si Matt Damon. Mai tarziu avea sa joace in filmul lui Richard Linklater, Dazed and Confused (1993) si in Mallrats (1995), in regia lui Kevin Smith.Tot in aceeasi perioada, Ben Affleck si Matt Damon, satui de lipsa de activitate de la Hollywood, s-au hotarat sa scrie un scenariu in care ei erau distribuiti in rolurile principale. Fratele lui Affleck, Casey, le face cunostinta cu Gus Van Sant si datorita acestuia, scenariul a fost luat de Miramax, astfel in 1997, povestea unui geniu matematician tulburat, care locuia in sudul Bostonului, devine bine cunoscutul Good Will Hunting.Inainte de realizarea filmului, Affleck a jucat in Chasing Amy, regizat de Kevin Smith in acelasi an. Succesul ulterior al filmului Good Will Hunting si Oscarul pentru cel mai bun scenariu, castigat de Ben Affleck si Matt Damon, i-a transformat pe cei doi, din actori competitivi in vedetele de aur ale Hollywood-ului.
