Fie joaca pe scena, in televiziune, in filme sau participa la interviuri serioase, ascultat sau privit actorul de comedie Robin Williams este un vulcan de energie. Williams s-a nascut pe 21 iulie 1952, in Chicago, si este fiul unui director de la Ford Motor.
Avea sa apara pentru prima data in serialul Comedy Store, ceea ce i-a adus un rol in serialul de scurta durata a lui George Schlatter, de la sfarsitul anilor '70 Laugh-In. De aici, Williams a fost in rolul unui extraterestru nebun intr-un episod din Happy Days. Personajul interpretat de Williams, din Mork from Ork a incantat publicul, iar producatorul Garry Marshall i-a dat lui Williams propriul sau serial Mork and Mindy, care a rulat din 1978 pana in 1982. Serialul a fost un succes si l-a clasificat pe Williams drept unul dintre cei mai populari comedianti (alaturi de Richard Pryo si Billy Crystal) in anii '70 si '80. Williams a debutat pe marele ecran in filmul lui Robert Altman - comedia fantastica Popeye (1980).
Trei ani mai tarziu, Williams a aparut in comedia Can I Do It...Till I Need Glasses? (1977). In urmatorul film are un rol de drama in The World According to Garp (1982), dar si acesta a fost un insucces in incasari. Insa filmul Good Morning Vietnam regizat de Barry Levinson, a fost un succes si i-a adus prima nominalizare la Oscar. In plus, pe langa munca din filme, Williams a inregistrat trei albume, a aparut in cateva comedii speciale la televiziune si din 1980, a fost gazda la Comic Relief, o campanie in beneficiul celor fara adapost.
In anii '80, Williams a avut serioase probleme cu drogurile, divortand de prima sa sotie si s-a casatorit cu dadaca fiului sau, care a devenit managerul sau si cu care are o fiica si un al doilea fiu.
