Orlando Jonathan Blanchard Bloom s-a nascut pe 13 ianuarie 1977 in Canterbury, Kent Marea Britanie. Mama sa Sonia Constance Copeland s-a nascut in Calcutta, India. Bunicii lui Bloom au locuit pe rand in Tasmania, Australia si India. Orlando a crezut ca tatal lui era sotul mamai sale, romancierul Harry Saul Bloom care a fost un activist important al luptei antiapartheid din Africa de Sud, dar la treisprezece ani (la noua ani dupa moartea lui Harry) mama sa ii dezvaluie un secret: tatal lui biologic era de fapt Colin Stone, partenerul Soniei si prietenul familiei in acelasi timp.Orlando a foat botezat dupa compozitorul secolului 17 Orlando Gibbons si mai are o sora Samantha Bloom cu doi ani mai mare ca el. Inca de mic Orlando Bloom nu a fost un copil academic sau atletic, abia a reusit sa termine liceul St. Edmunds`s din Carterbury datorita bolii numite dislexie. A fost incurajat de mama sa sa ia lectii de teatru. In 1993 s-a mutat la Londra pentru a se perfectiona in arta dramatica. In acest timp el a obtinut roluri minore in Casualty si Midsomer Murders. Bloom incerca sa-si traisca viata personala cat mai normal, el fiind un fan al echipei de fotbal Manchester United, in timpul filmarilor Kingdom of Heaven a adoptat un caine pe nume Sidi, a iesit cu mai multe actrite si modele cum ar fi: Kate Bosworth, Miranda Kerr, Miranda Kerr, Uma Thurman, Kirsten Dunst, Sienna Miller, Jessica Biel, Penélope Cruz printre care si colega sa de platou din Piratii din Caraibe Naomie Harris. De altfel Bloom are o colectie impresionanta de rupturi de oase si coaste. Din cauza acestora chiar putea sa-si petreaca restul vietii intr-un scaun cu rotile.
